Imaging diagnostic standard in multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN)

چکیده
Background Among all hereditary cancer syndromes MEN Type 1 and 2 are characterized by the concurrent but independent appearance of benign as well as malignant tumours. Neoplasias of parathyroid glands, pancreas, pituitary gland as well as neuroendocrine tumours of the stomach and intestinal wall are typical for MEN 1. Medullary thyroid carcinomas together with parathyroid adenomas and phaeochromocytomas are hallmarks of MEN 2. This presentation gives an overview about the multitude of imaging techniques that are inevitable for diagnostics and long-term follow up in MEN patients beyond molecular genetic and laboratory methods.

The role of nuclear imaging in multiple endocrine neoplasia 1 (MEN 1)
Multiple endocrine neoplasia 1 (MEN 1) is a rare genetic disorder classically characterized by a predisposition to tumors of the parathyroid glands, anterior pituitary gland, and pancreatic islet cells (1). In addition to exhibiting these characteristic tumors, MEN 1 patients also have an increased propensity for other tumors such as carcinoids, adrenal adenomas, angiofibromas, and lipomas (1, ...

We report a case of a 29-year-old female with the family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) presenting with hematuria and tachycardia, who was found to have bilateral adrenal masses on abdominal computed tomography and biochemical testing compatible with pheochromocytoma. Iodine-123 (I-123) metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy for preoperative planning prior to planned adrenale...

BACKGROUND This study aims to introduce the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the rare disease multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A). METHODS Thirteen cases of MEN 2A were diagnosed as medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and pheochromocytoma by biochemical tests and imaging examination. They were treated by bilateral adrenal tumor excision or laparoscopic surgery. RESULTS Nine patie...

UNLABELLED The aim of our study is to present our experience in the surgical treatment of nonfunctioning pancreatic endocrine tumors (NFPETs) in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1). PATIENTS AND METHOD Between 1996 and 2006 a total of 11 patients with clinically confirmed MEN 1 syndrome were monitored in an annual screening program that included evaluation of the pancrea...
